The Minnesota Twins (58-47 SU, 49-56 ATS) play the second game of their series against the New York Mets (56-50 SU, 53-53 ATS) after getting blown out in the series opener on Monday. The Mets badly needed that game, as they were coming off back-to-back losses to Atlanta. With New York still in a dogfight to get into a wild card position, a split in that series really wasn't what the Mets needed.
The biggest question now is whether that two-game slide was a blip or a sign of things to come. Most of the Mets' wins have come against lesser competition, with the exception of their mastery of the Yankees. Otherwise, the Mets have mostly been beating up on the weakest teams in the National League to get back in the race. A strong showing against the Twins would make a statement that the Mets' rise is for real.

The Twins are going with David Festa in a starting role, despite Festa having far more success out of the bullpen. Festa already came up as a starter in June, but was quickly sent back to Triple-A Saint Paul after two horrendous showings as a starter. Things looked much better in a relief role against Philadelphia, but it's questionable as to whether he has the right mindset to be a starter.
No such questions exist for Sean Manaea, who has enjoyed a fine season in the Big Apple. Manaea hasn't pitched this well since 2021 in Oakland, as his ERA is under 4 for the first time as a National League pitcher. Manaea has struggled a bit in his past three starts, but before the All-Star break, he had four straight outings go in the win column and made it through six innings in three of them. If he's back to being himself, the Mets have a big edge. He seems the more trustworthy pitcher; our prediction for Minnesota vs. New York is for the Mets to win.
