The Twins are in the running for the third wild card spot in a particularly open AL this year. But for now, August is squandering their chances, as they lost the first four games of the month, including two against the division-worst Royals in Kansas City.

Minnesota had already lost the last two games of their series against the Mariners in Seattle. However, their road trip took an unexpected turn in Kansas City, even though Lewis went 4-for-4 in the series opener. The Twins lost 8-2 on Tuesday in a game where only three Minnesota players managed a hit. The following day, Noah Cameron dominated the entire Twins lineup, going eight innings and allowing only two hits. It's in moments like these that Buxton's absence is most keenly felt, as he landed on the 10-day IL list at the worst possible time with a hip injury.

The Royals are without their starting third and first basemen, Maikel García and Pasquantino, but at least Witt Jr. is back in the lineup, and captain Pérez has had a recent offensive surge, becoming the franchise's all-time home run leader.
