After enduring a five-game losing skid that included two defeats to Seattle, Minnesota bounced back with consecutive wins to close out that series and end the slump. The Twins are now tied with Kansas City for third place in the AL Central, just three games back from second, and will look to climb further with a win in the opener.

Right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long gets the start for Detroit, making just his second appearance in the rotation this season. Since his June 4 debut against the White Sox, he’s come out of the bullpen three times, most recently tossing 6.1 innings of relief against Tampa Bay last Saturday.
Minnesota is expected to use an opener before handing the ball to David Festa, who will likely handle the bulk of the innings. Festa has started six games this season and most recently pitched 4.2 innings in relief on Sunday, allowing eight runs on 12 hits. As a starter, he owns a 1-1 record with a 4.78 ERA.
With Detroit’s lineup faring well against right-handed pitchers, they could hold the advantage in this matchup.
