The Orlando Magic will try to win their first game of the season tonight when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tipoff at the Kia Center in Orlando, FL, is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST, with coverage provided by NBA League Pass.
Both teams looked good on the offensive end of the court in their season openers. Minnesota, led by a 45-point night from Anthony Edwards, put up 131 points on Miami, while Paolo Banchero’s 35 points led the Magic to 125 against Atlanta. However, the defensive effort couldn't have been more different.
Giannis Antetokounmpo put up 35 on the T-wolves, but the rest of the roster didn't help much. Minnesota won 131-106. As for the Magic, they allowed four of Atlanta’s five starters to score 19+ points and the Hawks shot 39% from 3-point range on the way o a win, 132-125.
Minnesota worked on improving its perimeter offense in the offseason, and it worked. They shot 42% from 3-point range in their opener. Frontcourt depth was a concern, but they dominated the boards, 52-34. As for Orlando, you can’t be mad about 125 points, but with how bad their defense looked against Atlanta, it is hard to see them having much success against Edwards or LaMelo Ball.

Orlando is in a pretty bad spot for this game. If they collapse on Anthony Edwards and/or LaMelo Ball, Edwards and Ball will just kick it out to someone on the now-exposed perimeter. But if they don’t, Edwards and Ball are excellent at creating their own shots. The Magic should have an advantage in the frontcourt, but I’m not sure it will matter. Edwards and Ball will just make it rain from outside the paint.
