The Marlins, after being swept by the weak Rockies and losing another series against the Rays, started as slight underdogs for their Monday game against the Pirates, which was a truly disastrous one for the Marlins, and they ended up losing 3-10.

The Marlins started off by winning the game with Lopez's sixth home run of the season, a solo home run in the second inning. However, Eury Perez withstood the pressure from the Pirates' bats only until the third inning, where he allowed four runs in a rally that took him out of the game. They brought in reliever Jason Junk, who was further battered by the Pirates. In four innings, the home team scored five earned runs. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates scored four more runs to complete the game. The Marlins failed defensively, committing three errors, and at bat, it was a poor night, with Sanchez, Ramirez, Norby, and Myers each striking out twice.

The Pirates remain last in their division with a 27-40 record but are enjoying some good momentum, winning their last four games. They surprised the bookmakers by sweeping the Phillies in Pittsburgh and had 15 hits in their win over the Marlins.
