Starting on the mound for Miami is right-hander Cal Quantrill, who will make his 20th appearance of the season. The Marlins are 11-8 in games he starts. Quantrill is coming off one of his most impressive outings of the year, tossing six shutout innings and surrendering only two hits against the Kansas City Royals.
Although he didn’t factor into the decision in that game, his recent form has been solid, allowing two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts. However, opposing hitters have been relatively successful against him overall, batting .281 on the season. He’s also been vulnerable to the long ball, having allowed 12 home runs along with 24 walks across his starts.
Milwaukee counters with Freddy Peralta, who has emerged as one of the National League’s top starters this season. Peralta enters today’s game with a league-best 12 wins, complemented by a 2.85 ERA (seventh in the NL) and 122 strikeouts (12th in the league). The right-hander has won seven consecutive decisions and recently defeated the Dodgers, giving up four runs over five innings.
That performance included a rare home run allowed—the only one he has surrendered in his last four starts.
