After a stellar pitching job in Game 1, the Boston Red Sox will try to earn a convincing win against the Miami Marlins in Game 2 of their series at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox continue to strengthen their position in the wild card race after earning a 2-1 win over the Marlins in the series opener. Boston currently sits in second place in the American League wild card race with a 65-57 record, 1.5 games ahead of their rivals NY Yankees, and 1.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners. Apart from their one-run win on Thursday, the Red Sox recorded a huge 14-1 win over the Houston Astros this week, though they also lost twice to the same team in their series.
The Marlins are 58-64 in the season, third in the NL East. Their chance of making the postseason is close to zero, but they have a real good shot at ending their season with a winning record. They are 4-1 in the last five games, absorbing heavy losses to the Braves 1-7 and Cleveland 4-9 as well as close losses to the Guardians 3-4 (Game 1) and the Red Sox. Their only win in this stretch was 13-4 rout of the Guardians in Game 2.

The Red Sox are in good shape to take a 2-0 lead in this series after tapping Brayan Bello to start on Saturday. Bello is 2-3 with a 3.60 ERA in his last 5 starts, but he recently surrendered five earned runs against the Padres in his last start. Nevertheless, I think Bello would come through with better numbers against the Marlins, whom he limited to one earned run in each of his last two starts against them.
The Marlins are sending Cal Quantrill to match up with Bello. Quantrill surrendered one run in four innings in a 1-7 loss to the Braves on August 10. Against the Red Sox, Quantrill is allowing an average of 3.0 runs in his last three starts against the team. Although Miami is averaging a decent 4.4 runs per game in its last five games and Quantrill is a decent pitcher, Miami bullpen, which is carrying 6.89 ERA in the last five games, could cost them the match like they did in Game 1 when they allowed Trevor Story to hit a walk-off with the bases loaded in the 9th inning.
