After losing Tuesday's game, the Diamondbacks are now 2.5 games behind the Padres in the race for the final wild card spot. Lovullo's team desperately needs to win Wednesday's rubber matchup in their series against the Marlins at Chase Field.
This series has featured two very close games. In Game 1, the D-backs, who had to come from behind three times, scored two runs in the eighth inning with a home run by Lawlar and two more with an epic two-run homer by Carroll, his 21st of the year, to walk off with a victory over Miami. However, fortune favored the Fighting Fish on Wednesday in a game that was tied 1-1 in the eleventh. Ruiz hit a three-run double, and Tuesday's RBI double by the D-backs wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
That Tuesday loss was painful for Arizona, not only because of what it meant for their standings, but also because they stranded 15 runners in the 10th inning. Perdomo was poised to score the winning run but ended up being thrown out at home plate.
