The wait is over. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has finally arrived. On Thursday afternoon, tournament co-hosts Mexico will get the festivities underway by facing South Africa at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City. The 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup winners will be hoping to improve on what was a poor showing at the 2022 World Cup, when they were dumped out of the competition at the group stage. When they last hosted FIFA’s showpiece event, back in 1986, they reached the quarter-finals, and they’ll surely be looking to achieve something similar here.
The South Africans have never reached the World Cup quarter-finals. They’ll be playing at the tournament for the first time since 2010, when they exited after the group stage, despite hosting. In the early betting, the Mexicans are the clear favorites, and it’s easy to see why. Those looking for a slice of value should consider betting on Mexico’s mercurial Alexis Vega to register an assist. The Toluca man looks set to be the chief creator for El Tri this summer and he can get off to a promising start against weak opposition.

Mexico - South Africa: Form Analysis
The Mexicans have been quite busy in preparation for this tournament, playing three friendlies since the end of May. They first got the better of what is far from a poor Ghana team in quite sturdy fashion, winning by two goals to zero, before delivering another disciplined display to see off the Australians. That win against the Socceroos paved the way for the dismantling of a sorry-looking Serbia team, meaning that El Tri head into a World Cup that they’re helping to host in fine form.
The preparation period has been a little different for the South Africans, who haven’t been as busy, and who’re nothing like the same sort of form as Thursday’s hosts.
The preparation period has been a little different for the South Africans, who haven’t been as busy, and who’re nothing like the same sort of form as Thursday’s hosts. After a modest display at the African Cup of Nations late last year, the team known as Bafana Bafana have failed to step on the gas, tying with Panama back in March, before losing to the same opponents a few days later. They warmed up for this huge occasion with a friendly against Nicaragua in late May, tying 0-0.

Mexico & South Africa Squad Analysis
After some encouraging friendly displays, Javier Aguirre, who is leading El Tri at a third FIFA World Cup, has some interesting choices to make. Alexis Vega was rested from the start against Serbia but is likely to return to the starting XI, while Fulham's Raul Jimenez is expected to lead the forward line. Young and exciting midfielder Brian Gutierrez, who will be very familiar to Chicago Fire fans, is another likely starter after some promising efforts in friendlies.

For South Africa, Lyle Foster missed a penalty in the last warm-up game, though the Burnley striker is still expected to play up top for Bafana Bafana. There are more questions over which players support Foster in the wide areas, though. Orlando Pirates winger/forward Kamogelo Sebelebele started the last game, though Oswin Appollis is more than likely to come back into the starting XI here.

Our Mexico vs South Africa Prediction
The Mexicans have more than a few tricky players, and they really should have more than enough offensive quality to dismantle what appears to be a fairly weak South African team. Nobody should stand out as much as Alexis Vega, who has long been one of Mexico's most talented forward-thinking players.
At times Vega can be a little frustrating, but he's a creator of chances, there's no doubt about that, and after he's delivered three assists in his last four starts for club and country, the Toluca man should have no problem creating chances during the opening game.
Our Mexico vs South Africa Pick: Alexis Vega to Assist.
