Mexico won the last Gold Cup and is undefeated in matches played in 2026, but the demanding fans of the national team are still expecting a bigger victory in the pre-World Cup qualifiers when they face Australia in Pasadena, in one of two friendly matches before the World Cup begins.

Mexico will host the World Cup, and anything less than advancing from the group stage, the round of 32, and winning in the round of 16 will be considered a failure for "El Tri. "Javier Aguirre knows this and will put together a World Cup squad that blends the experience of veteran players like Ochoa with younger players like Armando González, the Chivas player who some predict could be a pleasant surprise at the World Cup.

Mexico is ranked 15th in the FIFA rankings, and Australia seems like a suitable challenge; however, Mexico is coming off avoiding defeat against three tough opponents in friendlies: Portugal, Belgium, and Ghana.

It is the Australian team, nicknamed "The Socceroos," that arrives looking lackluster. They recently came to the United States for friendly matches against Venezuela and Colombia, but their performance was disappointing, as they lost to both South American countries without scoring a goal.

This Australian team frankly doesn't seem as strong as previous ones; they will be without the creative Riley McGree due to injury, and doubts about their attacking options remain. Even so, their physical strength in battling for the ball and their tactical discipline are some of Australia's virtues.
