Swedish champions Malmö defeated Georgian champions in the Champions League qualifying round, then RFS, then Lithuanian champions. However, after drawing 0-0 against Copenhagen at Eleda Stadium, then in the Danish capital, Malmö was thrashed 0-5, leaving them without a chance of playing in the Champions League this year. They must emerge victorious from their tie against Sigma Olomouc of the Czech Republic if the Swedish team wants to appear in next season's Europa League.
Malmö was in the league stage of the previous Europa League for the 2024/2025 season, finishing sixth-worst in the league stage, being eliminated in the first round with 5 points out of a possible 24.
In the Chance Liga, the Czech Republic's top division, Malmö's rival, Sigma Olomouc, finished sixth but secured a spot in the Europa League or Conference League after winning the Mol Cup against Sparta Prague, their first cup title in more than 15 years.
The new season of the Czech league has already begun, and with a goal from striker Daniel Vasuilin, Sigma Olomouc won on Matchday 5 against Zilina; meanwhile, Malmö, in the Allsvenskan, has already played 20 matches.
