by Tyler Doty in Ligue 1 Picks
The last match of the third day of Ligue 1 is one of the most eagerly awaited of the season, as Olympique Lyonnais host Olympique de Marseille at the Groupama Stadium this Sunday at 2:45 p.m. EST. The Rhône-based club has been on tenterhooks all summer, having long believed it would be administratively relegated. However, an appeal allowed Les Gones to retain their place in the top flight of French football. Despite several departures during the summer transfer window (Perri, Cherki, Lacazette), they still have big ambitions for the coming months, as they will also be competing in the Europa League group stage.
It's not quite the same story for OM. During the summer, the Marseille management went all out and significantly strengthened Roberto De Zerbi's squad, with a return to the Champions League. However, a crisis quickly hit La Canebière. After Marseille's 1-0 defeat to Stade Rennais, a major altercation took place between Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe. The incident forced the club's management to suspend both players. OM will be keen to move on quickly, and a victory in the Olympico would allow them to do just that.

Lyon - Marseille: Form Analysis
It took a long time to be certain that Lyon would be playing in Ligue 1 this season. The Rhône-based club avoided administrative relegation thanks to its appeal to the DNCG. It quickly got back on track, winning four of its six preseason games. Only Bayern Munich managed to beat them (2-1). Les Gones prepared themselves well for the return of Ligue 1.
Since the championship resumed, they have been particularly impressive. Paulo Fonseca's team made a big statement in their opening game, winning 1-0 away to RC Lens. This victory gave them a huge confidence boost. Lyon managed to pull up with another win, giving FC Metz no chance (3-0). They made a successful debut at the Groupama Stadium this season.
Lyon has had a great start to Ligue 1.
Marseille also had a very convincing preseason. They didn't lose any of their six preseason games. Just before the start of Ligue 1, they pulled off a major upset by defeating Premier League heavyweights Aston Villa (3-1). The Marseille club thought they would continue their winning streak in their return to league play at Stade Rennais. However, they fell from grace, despite playing with a numerical advantage for almost an hour. Ludovic Blas secured victory for Rennes in the dying minutes (0-1).
Following this setback, an altercation took place between Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe after the match. Both players were suspended by the club's management. Roberto De Zerbi's men were looking to bounce back when they hosted Paris FC last weekend. They had a scare, as after leading 2-0, they were caught up. At the end of the match, however, Marseille managed to step up a gear to secure their first win of the season (5-2).

Lyon & Marseille Squad Analysis
Lyon will not have a full squad for this Olympico. Orel Mangala and Ernest Nuamah are still injured. Saël Kumbedi is more than ever on his way out of the Rhône club, as he is set to join VfL Wolfsburg. Paulo Fonseca has seen several important departures during the summer transfer window. Lucas Perri, Duje Caleta-Car, Jordan Veretout, Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette have all packed their bags. That doesn't mean Les Gones don't have what it takes to play a leading role this season.
They have been strengthened by the arrivals of Dominik Greif, Rubin Kluivert, Pavel Sulc, Adam Karabec, and Tyler Morton. The latter has been impressive since his debut with Lyon. He performed very well in the first two Ligue 1 matches. Paulo Fonseca can also count on a few key players who have stayed, such as Corentin Tolisso, Georges Mikautadze, and Malick Fofana. The Belgian winger scored a superb goal against FC Metz last weekend.
Tyler Morton is impressing in his debut with OL.
As for Marseille, Igor Paixao is still injured. Azzedine Ounahi and Faris Moumbagna are on their way out. Adrien Rabiot has been sidelined since his altercation with Jonathan Rowe, but is reportedly seeking reinstatement in the coming days. There are also several uncertainties. It is not yet known whether Facundo Medina, Geoffrey Kondogbia, and Amine Harit will be able to play in this highly anticipated Ligue 1 match.
The Phocéens did not skimp on spending during the summer transfer window. CJ Egan-Riley, Angel Gomes, Timothy Weah, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have all joined La Canebière. The latter made a successful return to Marseille, scoring twice against Paris FC last weekend. Mason Greenwood also shone against the Parisians, with one goal and two assists. Roberto De Zerbi will be expecting a lot from Amine Gouiri, who has yet to make his mark this season.
