The Los Angeles Dodgers return to Japan to open their season for the second straight year, taking on the Chicago Cubs at Tokyo Dome on Monday (US Time).
The Dodgers will kick off their World Series title defense in the Land of the Rising Sun, where Japanese stars Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani and Cubs hurler Shoto Imanaga are expected to get a warm welcome from the home crowd. Months after beating the New York Yankees in 5 games to claim their second title in five years, Los Angeles enter the season with a souped-up pitching rotation, adding former CY Young Winner Blake Snell, All-Star Tanner Scott, and another Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki to an already formidable lineup that features Yamamoto and Ohtani, who is anticipated to pitch this season after skipping the mound last year to recover from an elbow injury.
The Cubs aim to make the postseason this year after finishing third in the National League Central with an 83-79 record. Chicago hasn’t made a high-impact free-agency or trade move in the offseason, an indication that they are betting on their young players to take a significant leap in their development this year. Shoto Imanaga, who had a terrific rookie year with a 15-3 record, was named in February as the opening day starter for the Cubs.

The Dodgers kicks off their season with a 12-8 record in Spring Training, highlighted by an 8-game winning streak. In four preseason games, Yamamoto posted a 1-0 slate with a 4.05 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 13 innings. The Japanese dazzled in the Dodgers’ second to the last game of Spring Training, striking out seven batters over 5.0 innings. Also, in the same game, Ohtani delivered a 118.5 mph double for his third extra-base hit of the preseason. Imanaga said he’s honored to be the Cubs’ opening starter, pitching in front of his countrymen at the world-famous Tokyo Dome. Imanaga, too, had a solid preseason with a 1-0 record, 5.73 ERA, and 13 strikeouts, though I don’t think he can do much against the overwhelming batting power the Dodgers are bringing to Tokyo.
Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and possibly Mookie Betts (day-to-day) are all big hitters in their own right and can do so much damage once they get into their flow at the plate. The Cubs are a rising team to watch for this year, especially if their prospects begin to hit their potential.
