The Los Angeles Dodgers (87-59 SU, 73-73 ATS) begin a weekend series with the Atlanta Braves (79-67 SU, 67-79 ATS) that carries playoff implications for both teams. The Braves are really feeling the pressure now, as they’re down to 16 games left to try to catch one of the Mets, Diamondbacks or Padres. The only one of those teams they’ll play the rest of the way is New York, so their goal is to get to that series in no worse than a tie.
The Dodgers have their sights on a bigger goal: the No. 1 overall seed in the National League. Los Angeles really wants to get home-field advantage should it meet Philadelphia in the NLCS, and the Dodgers trail the Phillies by one game. However, the pitching has been on the inconsistent side, as the Dodgers have gone from giving up five runs in a series to Cleveland to giving up 24 to the Cubs. Whichever pitchers show up in Georgia will go a long way to deciding this matchup.

He’s alternated between starting and relieving, and his success or failure has almost been entirely predicated on whether he keeps the ball in the park. Of his past 12 runs conceded, seven of them have come directly off a ball landing in the bleachers.
Spencer Schwellenbach is looking to bounce back after the defense let him down against Toronto. Schwellenbach could have been better in allowing 10 hits in six innings, but three of the six runs the Jays scored with him on the mound weren’t his fault. He hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his past eight starts, and he’s tended to pitch well in night games. With Los Angeles rather inconsistent with Knack and not doing well in series openers, our prediction for Los Angeles vs. Atlanta is for the Braves to win.
