For the Nats, seeing a team that’s not in the playoff race is something of a relief. Washington’s long-shot bid came to a swift close when it dropped five of six to St. Louis and Arizona, but it has played pretty well against teams closer to its own level. Even when facing a genuine playoff threat such as Milwaukee, the Nats have held their own. Griffin Canning has been just awful away from Southern California. He’s 0-8 with a 5.86 ERA and he’s gotten lit up by some weak opponents. In his past three road starts, he only made it through the fifth inning once. Even that wasn’t as impressive as it seemed, as it came against Seattle’s weak offense.
Patrick Corbin continues to get lit up for the Nationals. It’s honestly a mystery as to why the Nats keep giving Corbin the ball, as he has never been the same pitcher since the pandemic. Before COVID, he was one of the more reliable starters in the game, posting an ERA of 3.25. It’s 5.88 this year, the fourth straight year his ERA has been above 5. With Canning struggling to do anything well away from home and Corbin just plain poor anywhere, runs should be a common sight in this game. Our prediction for Los Angeles vs. Washington is Over 9.5.
