The Tampa Bay Rays (9-7 SU, 7-9 ATS) look to get more from their pitching staff as they host the Los Angeles Angels (7-8 SU, 7-8 ATS). Pitching is usually a strength for Tampa Bay, but the bullpen has really let it down in the first two weeks of the season. The Rays’ bullpen has an ERA over 6, not exactly the way to protect leads.
Tampa Bay’s biggest issue is that it has given up far too many home runs from the bullpen. The Rays’ relievers have allowed 12 home runs in their time on the mound, worse than everyone other than Toronto. It gets even worse when you look at the bullpen WHIP, which sits at a league-worst 1.69. Based on the numbers, this would be the perfect time for the Angels to add to the Rays’ misery.

With the bullpen really struggling to keep the ball in the park, the stage is set for the Angels to have a big game. With Patrick Sandoval on the other end, there’s potential for a big night given his slow start to 2024. Sandoval has been a bit too willing to lose hitters at the plate, and when hitters become base runners, bad things usually happen for the defense.
Zach Eflin has had one strong start and two questionable ones in 2024. One thing you can count on with Eflin is that he’ll pitch into the fifth and sixth innings to set his team up for a win. With the Rays’ bullpen full of question marks, Eflin might have to try to get more than 15 outs before calling it a day. Given both teams’ issues with their pitching as a whole, our prediction for Los Angeles vs. Tampa Bay is Over 8.
