The Los Angeles Angels will begin the second half of the season in Philadelphia with a three-game weekend series against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. First Pitch for this interleague contest is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. EST.
Jose Soriano is scheduled to get the start for the Angels today. The right-hander is 6-7 on the year in 20 starts with a 3.90 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and a .258 OBA. He has been at his best when pitching on the road with a 5-2 record in ten road starts with a 2.47 ERA and .239 OBA. He lost his last start before the break; he’s gone 1-2 with q 3.38 ERA in three July starts. The Phillies are going with Jesus Luzardo to kick the second half of the season off. Luzardo went 8-5 in 19 starts in the first half of the year with a 4.14 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and .272 OBA. He has not had his best stuff at home this season, going 4-2 in nine starts with a 4.53 ERA and .281 OBA. In two July starts, he is 1-1 with a 5.0 ERA. However, in the first, he only lasted two innings and gave up five earned runs (six total). But in the second, against a very good San Francisco squad, he went seven innings, giving up just three hits and no runs.

The Angels have had some nice moments this season, but not enough of them, hence a sub-.500 record (47-49). Soriano has been tough on the road, but the Phillies have been hitting well at home (.274), but only .254 vs. righties. LA is not hitting well at home or on the road. If you want a winner, I’d lean towards the Phillies, but there is no value in the ML, and I can’t say they’ll cover the runline with confidence. However, Soriano can keep the Phillies offense from getting out of hand, and Luzardo is good enough to keep a weak LA lineup in check.
