The Los Angeles Angels (36-49 SU, 48-37 ATS) look to get back on track after consecutive losses to the Oakland Athletics (32-56 SU, 43-45 ATS). The Athletics haven’t pulled off a sweep since May 1, when they won three straight against the Pirates as part of a six-game winning streak. Since then, Oakland has struggled as expected, although it has been a bit more competitive than was expected.
The Angels have been about as effective as most people expected this season, given the loss of Shohei Ohtani in free agency and Mike Trout to injury. What’s been left behind hasn’t been able to do much of anything, as the Angels find themselves far behind Seattle for the division lead. Los Angeles seemed to be on the cusp of turning the corner a week ago when it ripped off a six-game surge, but it’s gone the other way with three straight losses this week.

The Angels plan to try a bullpen game led by Roansy Contreras, which hasn’t been a great choice for them. Contreras did record his longest outing of the season last time out against Oakland, but he only pitched for three innings. The Angels’ bullpen usually isn’t good enough to manage this kind of game, even against Oakland’s offense.
JP Sears isn’t doing much better for the Athletics. Usually, he’s been a hard-luck loser for Oakland, as he hasn’t gotten more than three runs of support in six of his past seven starts. The Athletics finally gave him some runs and he responded, going six innings against Arizona in a 9-4 victory. But Sears hasn’t allowed fewer than three runs in five of his past six starts, so even when he’s pitching well, he still hasn’t excelled at keeping runs off the board.
