Although they won the series against the Braves in Atlanta, May wasn't a victorious month for the Red Sox. They once again failed to maintain their winning record even after they managed to match it, repeating a pattern that has been occurring with Cora's squad since 2024. After their Game 1 loss to the Angels, their record is now 29-33, falling behind the Blue Jays and the Rays, 8.5 games behind their rival Yankees without having yet faced them in 2025.

The Red Sox had started against the Angels as a -145 betting favorite, but right-hander Richard Fitts had his worst performance as a starter in 2025. It was confirmed before the game that he would retain his spot in the rotation, but that may be about to change after his outing on Monday, where he only recorded 3 outs in an Angels first at-bat that gave him 4 hits and 5 earned runs. He also allowed home runs from Neto, Trout, and Adell in the first inning, dashing the hopes of the more than 30,000 fans in attendance as early as the first inning.

However, the Red Sox put up a good fight. Dobbins had a stellar day from the bullpen and mitigated the damage done to Fitts. Devers hit his 17th double of the season, and the game was as close as 5-6 before Adell hit his second homer of the day for the Angels.
