Neither Monterrey nor León was able to win even one of their three Leagues Cup matches in the 90 minutes, something that should be especially worrying for Monterrey, as it represents a setback from their successful run at the Club World Cup. However, Monterrey, seeing their Leagues Cup chances jeopardized from their opening match against Cincinnati, used numerous variables, so much so that coach Torrent fielded two alternate teams other than their usual Liga MX counterparts against the NY Red Bulls and Charlotte.

Now Monterrey returns to play the fourth round of Liga MX matches. In the first round, they were thrashed by Pachuca 3-0, somewhat hampered by the Club World Cup, and then the schedule was friendly to them, with matches against Atlético San Luis and Atlas; Monterrey won both. The victory against the Red and Blacks earned Ricardo Chavez a second yellow card, so he will be suspended for the match against León.

León has only won one of six matches between Liga MX and Leagues Cup; star player James Rodríguez hasn't been particularly influential at the start of the season, except for his goal against Guadalajara.
