The American public will see 18-year-old local player Learner Tien take on 33-year-old Spanish veteran Pablo Carreno-Busta in the quarter-finals of the Winston-Salem tournament. Learner Tien is playing in his 3rd professional season and entered the tournament with a 3-set victory over Australian Tristan Schoolkate, followed by a 3-set win over Hungarian Fabian Marozsan. He was not expected to face Thiago Seyboth Wild in the 1/8 finals, a match he dominated quickly and efficiently, 6-4, 6-3. The American qualifier has had a perfect tournament so far, but he faces a tough opponent in the quarter-finals.
Pablo Carreno-Busta is a player who reached the world's Top 15 in 2022, when he won the Montreal tournament. Physically unlucky, the Spaniard suffered several injuries in 2023, including an elbow injury that lasted almost a year. Downgraded to 606th place last year, he has already made up a lot of ground and is now in the Top 300, so it's not his ATP ranking that should be relied on, but his 2022 performances on the circuit. Far superior and far more experienced, he could reach the semi-finals if he keeps up his good form.
