Learner Tien of the United States braces for another tough battle on Wednesday as he goes face-to-face with Andrey Rublev of Russia in the second round of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open in Washington D.C.
Tien cruised through to the second round with a 6-1 6-4 win over compatriot Emilio Nava on Monday. The teenager exhibited poised and tremendous ball-striking to make a quick work of Nava. Tien collected 20 points off the first serves and added 16 off the second, yielding only one service break in the entire match. He also converted 17 breakpoint chances behind 17 return points.
Rublev will attempt to stage another deep run following a semifinal finish at the 2025 Los Cabos Open. The former top-10 started his North American hard-court season a week earlier, reaching the final four stage of the ATP 250 event before losing to Aleksandar Kovacevic in three sets 3-6 6-4 6-4. Rublev carries a 7-6 record on the hard court this year and a career 65.8 percent win rate on the surface.

Our Learner Tien vs Andrey Rublev Prediction
should you pick Learner Tien to cover +3.5 Games? Tien carries an impressive 76.9 percent win rate in 122 hard-court matches. And while Rublev looks like a firm pick to win straight-up because of his experience and caliber as a former top-10 player, I would not be surprised if Tien pushed the Russian to the limit in this matchup. Tien might be just 19 years old, but this young player carries himself like a veteran on the tour, showing incredible poise and confidence to mix it up with top-flight players.
In just his first full season on the ATP Tour, the American has already salvaged two wins over top-5 players and compiled a 3-1 record against ATP top-10 opponents. On the other hand, Rublev has found himself on the receiving end of upsets this year, losing 11 times to players ranked between top-51 and top-100.
Armed with the experience and impressive 198-103 record on hard courts, Rublev remains a formidable opponent for anyone competing in Washington this week. However, if there’s one teenager who possesses the skills paired with the unbridled confidence to take the top-10 player head on, that would be none other than Tien, who never shies away from any challenge.
