Germany will go for a second win at the 2026 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament on Saturday, when it faces Latvia at Fiera Milano in Milan.
The Germans began the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Denmark. Leon Draisaitl needed only 23 seconds to open the scoring, and Tim Stützle popped up with a pair of goals in the second period. Team Germany’s superstars showed up for this game, and goalie Philipp Grubauer also deserves credit after stopping 37 shots for a .974 save percentage.
Germany was outshot 38-26 in the game and must clean up the defensive play to have a chance of getting its fourth Olympic medal in men’s ice hockey, as much tougher challenges lie ahead.
Latvia kicked off the Olympics with a 5-1 loss to Team USA. Reners Krastenbergs had an answer to Brady Tkachuk’s goal in the first period, but the Latvians were completely outclassed after the first intermission. The Americans struck two power-play goals and outshot Latvia 38-18.
On Thursday, Latvia took four penalties and will need to play with more discipline against Germany, which has the NHL’s second-highest power-play scorer. Draisaitl has scored 34 of his 80 points this season with the man advantage.

Our Germany vs Latvia Prediction
The Latvians suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the U.S., but they were very competitive in the first period. On Saturday, Harijs Vitolins’ team should aim to replicate this effort throughout the game.
Germany has more talent, but Team Latvia is capable of matching anyone on its day, as shown by its bronze-medal finish at the World Championships three years ago. Vitolins’ men will work hard to keep the game tight, making a low-scoring game likely.
Our prediction for Germany vs. Latvia: Neither team to score 4 goals.
