The LA Galaxy and CF Cruz Azul square off on Sunday in a Leagues Cup match that pits the reigning MLS Cup champions against the current Concacaf Champions Cup holders. The Galaxy opened their Leagues Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Club Tijuana 5-2 on July 31.
That offensive explosion was a much-needed bright spot for LA, which has surprisingly languished at the bottom of the MLS standings this season despite last year’s championship. In the win over Tijuana, the Galaxy’s attack came alive with winger Joseph Paintsil scoring two goals and assisting another, and veteran star Marco Reus finding the net as well. It was a statement performance from LA, which will now look to carry that form into the clash with a Cruz Azul side in need of a response.
The Galaxy have a solid track record in Leagues Cup play – they advanced from the group stage in 2023 – and with home-field advantage at Dignity Health Sports Park, they will be aiming to put themselves in prime position to advance.
Cruz Azul enters this match reeling from a shock 7-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders in their tournament opener. That defeat was the heaviest in Leagues Cup history and a stunning result given Cruz Azul’s pedigree. Just weeks ago, “La Máquina” were celebrating a 2025 Champions Cup triumph and were considered contenders for this tournament.
Against Seattle, the Mexican side was overwhelmed in the second half, conceding six goals after halftime. New manager Nicolás Larcamón will demand a response from his squad to avoid an early exit. Cruz Azul has plenty of tournament experience – they won the inaugural Leagues Cup in 2019 and are one of Liga MX’s most storied clubs with multiple league titles – but they must tighten up defensively and regroup quickly after the Seattle drubbing.

Our Los Angeles Galaxy vs CF Cruz Azul Prediction
Several players will be under the spotlight in this matchup. For LA Galaxy, winger Joseph Paintsil’s pace and finishing make him a constant danger. He's coming off a man-of-the-match outing. Creative midfielder Riqui Puig will look to pull the strings in the Galaxy attack, and Marco Reus adds world-class experience and goal-scoring ability in the final third.
The Galaxy’s back line, led by center-back Jalen Neal and veteran Martin Cáceres, will aim to contain Cruz Azul’s attackers. On the Cruz Azul side, watch for winger Uriel Antuna to try to spark the offense; the former Galaxy player has the speed to trouble defenses.
Midfielder Carlos Rodríguez is another key figure who can orchestrate play and chip in with goals from midfield. Center-back Juan Escobar and his defensive partners need a significantly improved performance to avoid a repeat of the defensive collapse seen in the first match.
Cruz Azul should be motivated to restore pride after their humbling loss, but the Galaxy have momentum and the advantage of playing at home. Our prediction for LA Galaxy vs. CF Cruz Azul: LA Galaxy to win.
