by Lou Aguila in Tennis Picks
A day after putting up a gallant win over a much younger opponent, Kei Nishikori shoots for another upset against the more experienced Karen Khachanov of Russia in the second round of the 2025 Geneva Open.
Nishikori turned back the hands of time to beat Learner Tien of the United States 4-6 6-4 6-4. The Japanese turned a losing match to one of his best comebacks in recent years, using every trick in his playbook to overcome a strong challenge from his teen opponent. Nishikori, 3-2 on clay in 2025, collected 44 points off his first serves and broke serves three times.
Khachanov will be playing his first match at Geneva after receiving a bye for being the No.4 seed in the competition. Khachanov has put together a fine clay-court season, compiling a 6-4 record on the red dirt and reaching the semifinal in Barcelona and fourth round in Rome.

Our Karen Khachanov vs Kei Nishikori Prediction
Fearless Forecast: Karen Khachanov ends 4-match losing skid vs. Kei Nishikori
I think it’s about time for Karen Khachanov to end his 4-match losing streak against Kei Nishikori. He’s in terrific form this clay-court season, having the opportunity to compete at the highest level with stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Tommy Paul, and Alejandro Fokina. The Russians did well in those games regardless of the results. On the other hand, we have the 35-year-old Nishikori, who had to dig deep from his bag of tricks to beat a clay-court newbie Learner Tien in three sets. Nishikori would be my pick if this match was set 7 or 8 years ago. But father is undefeated. On Tuesday, Nishikori will taste defeat at the hands of Khachanov for the first time in five matches.
Our betting prediction for Kei Nishikori vs. Karen Khachanov: Karen Khachanov will win 2-0
