The Seattle Mariners drew the first blood after taking the series opener against the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, on Monday. Mariners RHP George Kirby blanked the Royals for 7.0 innings, while Luke Raley drove three runs, including a two-run homer in the second inning to open up the scoring for the home team. The Mariners, who are sitting atop the American West standings, raised their record to 23-19 and 14-9 at home. The Royals, meanwhile, dropped to 25-18 and 10-10 on the road. The loss also sent them to third in the American League central standings, one game below the Minnesota Twins and 1.5 games off the division leader Cleveland Guardians. Royals RHP Michael Wacha (2-4, 5.15 ERA with 37 strikeout) is scheduled to duel against Mariners RHP Logan Gilbert (3-1, 2.94 ERA with 54 strikeouts). Wacha allowed two earned runs through six innings in the Royals’ 10-4 win over the Angels. Gilbert, on the other hand, aim for a better showing after he gave up eight earned runs in four innings in a 11-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
