The Guardians played an excellent first game of their weekend series against the Royals in Cleveland on Friday. A superb bullpen, timely hitting, and strong defense, including a diving grab by the CF to close out the game, led to a 7-0 victory against the Royals in a game where the Guardians had started as the -125 favorite.
Bibee didn't allow the Royals any runs in 4.2 innings, but he filled the pitches with four walks, and the relievers served as firefighters, starting with Herrin, who earned his second win of the season, followed by Smith, Gaddis, and McKenzie, who got the rest of the outs. The Guardians' bullpen is now in the top five in MLB.
Meanwhile, the Royals, with strong performances from some of their starters, have a 7-7 record to start the 2025 season but are struggling to produce runs. Just two days before the loss to the Guardians in Kansas, the Twins were also dominated and shut out by Ryan, and the Royals have not scored five or more runs since April 5.
