The Kansas City Royals (66-55 SU, 66-55 ATS) start a series with the Cincinnati Reds (60-61 SU, 68-53 ATS) that has taken on more meaning than expected. The Royals aren’t much of a surprise, as they’ve been playing well throughout the season and find themselves in a dogfight for both the AL Central and the American League wild card spots.
But the Reds have gone from dead last in the NL Central to second place in the division and now have a legit chance to get into the playoff race. At just four games back of Atlanta and two back of the Mets, Cincinnati has enough time to make a run at the postseason if it can keep this up. The Reds’ record on the run line says that they’re good enough to stay in games; they just have to turn close losses into wins.

Cincinnati is making things happen because of its pitching. Nick Martinez was already a solid reliever for the Reds, and his return to the starting rotation has gone beautifully to this point. In his two starts since the trade deadline, Martinez hasn’t allowed a run, pitching 12 straight shutout innings.
Kansas City hasn’t been doing anywhere near as well at keeping runs off the board. Prior to a 4-1 win over Minnesota on Wednesday, the Royals had played to the over on seven straight occasions. It wasn’t entirely because their bats were surging; Kansas City allowed 51 runs in those seven games. Michael Lorenzen has done credible work since joining the Royals, but the bullpen has not backed him up. In his two starts in Kansas City, the bullpen has allowed five runs after he left the game each time. With Cincinnati’s pitching holding up much better, our prediction for Kansas City vs. Cincinnati is for the Reds to win.
