The Kansas City Royals (57-49 SU, 59-47 ATS) face the Chicago White Sox (27-81 SU, 47-61 ATS) in a must-win series if they plan to compete for the AL wild card. The Royals have been stuck in third gear in the AL Central all season, as they’ve been good enough to stick close with Cleveland and Minnesota but not quite good enough to compete for the title. If they played in the AL West like the old days, they’d be in fine shape, as they actually have a better record than both Houston and Seattle.
The Royals really need more out of Alec Marsh, who hasn’t pitched very well on the road this season. For the year, he’s got a 5.11 ERA away from Kauffman Stadium, and his past three starts have been uglier than usual. Only one of his past six starts have seen him allow fewer than three runs, and the Royals are just 2-4 in those games.
