The Indiana Pacers will kick off the new NBA season tonight in New Orleans, LA, at the Smoothie King Center against the Pelicans. Fans can follow the action on NBA League Pass when the game begins at 8 p.m. EST.
For the Indiana Pacers, the struggle was all too real last season without Tyrese Haliburton (who tore his Achilles in the 2025 NBA Finals). They finished 19-63, the second-worst record in the NBA a year after making the NBA Finals. But after a year off, he is set to make his return. A healthy Ivica Zubac will go a long way toward improving the team, as will the addition of Kelly Oubre Jr. and Larry Nance Jr. But overall, improvement will come with Haliburton’s return.
As for the Pelicans, after winning 26 games last season, they opted not to make a massive roster overhaul. Instead, they hired former Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley. With Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, and several promising young players, the Pelicans have a lot of promise but will need further development to have a chance at being competitive in the loaded Western Conference.

Ivica Zubac was technically an addition last season but played only a few games due to injuries. Both teams will be better than they were last season, but with Haliburton back, the Pacers should take this one with relative ease. I expect a slow start, as it's his first game back, but he’ll regain his form by the second half and help the team pull away.
