On Wednesday, during the early afternoon for US viewers, the UEFA Women's European Championships begin in Switzerland. The opening match will see Iceland take on Finland, and both teams will be super keen to get off to a good start, especially with tough games against a strong Norway team and tournament hosts the Swiss to follow. For Iceland, it's all about justifying quite strong favoritism, while for Finland, it's about causing an upset and making things very interesting.
When the pair last met, back in 2023, the Finnish women did indeed cause a bit of an upset, winning by two goals to one in Iceland. However, that was just a friendly, while Þorsteinn Halldórsson's team has improve markedly since, holding off some very decent teams in the recently concluded UEFA Nations League campaign.
