Tommy Paul of the United States will battle a resurging Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Rome Masters on Thursday.
Paul will have an opportunity to match his semifinal appearance at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship over a month ago with a victory over Hurkacz, whom he has already played three times. Paul earned his place in the quarterfinal in Rome after upsetting Alex De Minaur of Australia 7-5 6-3. The American got the better of the Aussie by conceding only two service breaks and winning 27 points off his first serves. He also broke De Minaur 4 times off the back of 28 return points.
After a bumpy start to his 2025 campaign, Hurkacz is back in the quarterfinal stage of an ATP 1000 level event. The Pole, who has lost four of his last five matches before the Italian Open, showed incredible shot-making and poise under duress to outlast Miami Open champion and rising star Jakub Mensik in a three-set classic 7-6(5) 4-6 7-6(5). Hurkacz pulled off the win behind 62 points off his first serves and 19 aces. The win sealed Hurkacz’s debut in the round of 8 of the Italian Open.
