Who would have bet a penny on Hungary reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup? Not many people! Especially since the Hungarian women had been routed in their opening match against France (-46), before bouncing back to dominate Nigeria and South Korea and secure a spot in the playoffs. But even better, Peter Volgyi’s players kept up their momentum to defeat Japan (the 2021 Olympic silver medalist) on Tuesday after a stunning second half (84–63). Led by a commanding Dorka Juhasz (averaging 15.3 points), the Hungarians are no longer to be taken lightly, and 40 years after their last appearance at this stage of the World Cup, Hungary has earned the right to face the ultimate benchmark: the United States.
Team USA is the four-time defending champion, and it’s only natural that the Americans are considered the overwhelming favorites. However, this first round has revealed some weaknesses in Kara Lawson’s squad. While the victories over China (94–61) and the Czech Republic (105–64) were never in doubt, the narrow win over Italy (55–52) highlighted a few shortcomings among Breanna Stewart’s teammates. But to beat Team USA, you can’t let any opportunity slip by, and the close call against the Italians will have served as a wake-up call ahead of the knockout stage, where the Americans will remain the team to beat.
