The United States meets Hungary in a vital 2026 IIHF World Championship Group A matchup on Monday at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich, Switzerland.
The reigning champions have been inconsistent at the tournament and are suddenly in danger of missing the quarterfinals. Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Latvia has left the U.S. sixth in Group A with five points in five games. There isn’t any room for error left now as Team USA closes out the group stage against Hungary and Austria.
The Hungarians have been one of the whipping boys in Switzerland and lost 9-0 to the hosts on Saturday. However, they beat Great Britain 5-0 in a head-to-head clash, and that result will probably be enough for Hungary to remain in the top division for another year.
While Hungary has already achieved its goal at the 2026 IIHF World Championship, the Americans still have a lot of work to do. After winning the championship last year, the team can’t settle for anything less. Considering the situation in the group, we should see a desperate U.S. team on the ice in Zurich on Monday. They have a negative goal difference and will look to aim to make the score as big as possible.
