The Houston Texans (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) open the 2024 season in the same place where they ended the 2023 regular season, visiting the Indianapolis Colts (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS). Last year, a late stand by the Houston defense won the AFC South title for the Texans and kept the Colts out of the postseason. That marked significant improvement for both teams from 2022, as both finished with winning records in 2023 after combining to win seven games in 2022.
Indianapolis’ biggest concern will be whether Anthony Richardson is really ready to take over this team. The Colts drafted Richardson last year, knowing he would likely be a project with tremendous upside. Richardson got injured very early into the season, forcing the Colts to ride with Gardner Minshew. Minshew is now in Las Vegas, and Richardson doesn’t have much of a safety net with Joe Flacco and Sam Ehlinger behind him. If the Colts are to go anywhere, he must be successful.

Houston crashed in the divisional round against Baltimore, but the Texans were never supposed to have gotten that far in the first place. CJ Stroud looked really good as a rookie, turning what had been a moribund squad into winners by avoiding mistakes. Last year, Stroud threw for 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions, and the Houston defense turned into a genuine strength.
These Texans are a year better and added a significant piece in wide receiver Stefon Diggs. The Colts also made strides in 2023, but it feels like Houston is further along in its development. Richardson will get his first taste of genuine game action, and he’s doing it against an aggressive defense that knows how to make good quarterbacks look bad. He’s likely to make a couple of key mistakes, and if so, the Houston defense should take full advantage. Our prediction for Houston vs. Indianapolis is Texans -3.
