The Houston Astros are starting the week off with a three-game series vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. First for Game 1 at George M. Steinbrenner Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST today.
Houston played to a series split in Arlington, going 2-2 vs. the Rangers. They closed the series out with a 4-3 win yesterday. Framber Valdez led the way pitching seven solid innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs. But Houston didn’t pull into the lead until a three-run homer from Isaac Paredes in the eighth inning. Tampa Bay comes home after going 3-3 on their recent road trip and dropping two of three to the Marlins in Miami.
Houston will give Colton Gordon the ball to start the day. Gordon will be making just his second start in the Big Leagues. His first came last week against Kansas City at home where he went 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, two walks, and struck out three. With a bullpen that has the second-lowest ERA in baseball (2.71), the leash will probably be short. Tampa Bay is giving Ryan Pepiot the start. Pepiot is 2-5 on the season in nine starts with a 3.93 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.

It is really easy to overlook a minor league pitcher that you haven’t heard much (or anything) about. His first MLB start was not perfect, but he didn’t do bad either. During his time with the AAA club, Gordon was lights out (4-0 in eight starts with a 2.25 ERA). Pepiot, while he has pitched better than his record would indicate, the team lost five of his six starts. Tampa Bay is doing a better job at the plate than Houston over the last week, but between Gordon and the second-best bullpen in baseball, the Rays could be in for a long day. It will be a low-scoring game, and one that Houston should win.
