The San Diego Padres (61-57, 33-26 Home) will host the Houston Astros (6-58, 30-29 Away) in the series finale of their three-game weekend series today. The action is set to get underway at Petco Park in San Diego, CA, at 8:20 p.m. EST on NBC.
Houston entered the series fresh off a loss to Toronto at home in extra innings on Thursday and rebounded with a 6-3 win over the Padres Friday night. But it was San Diego’s turn to rebound yesterday as they took the W in a close 3-2 contest.
Randy Vasquez is scheduled to start for the Padres. Vasquez is 7-6 in 22 appearances (18 starts) with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Teams have hit .285 against him. He has not had his best stuff at home, where he is 3-4 in 10 appearances (eight starts) with a 4.91 ERA and a .299 OBA.
As for Houston, the Astros are scheduled to go with Cristian Javier to start the day. Javier is 1-2 this season in nine appearances (five starts). He has gone 1-1 on the road in five appearances (three starts) with a 6.59 ERA and a .298 OBA.

There hasn’t been a ton of offense in this series, but I expect that to change today, with two starting pitchers and teams hitting close to .300 against this season. I might give Houston a slight edge in this game since the Astros have hit .287 over the last week, but the Padres have hit .245 and generated more runs (30-27), albeit with an additional game (seven to six). But Vasquez has been better than Javier, so I don’t know that it is much of an edge at all. It is hard to say who will win this game, but it will more than likely be a high-scoring contest.
