The Astros have spent this series coming to an uncomfortable reality: they might be good enough to win the AL West, but they’re probably not good enough to win anything beyond that.
The Phillies have gone in the opposite direction, as their recent slump seems to have lit a fire under them. Philadelphia has lost eight in a row with Walker on the mound, and he hasn’t made it to the fifth inning in any of his past four starts. He’s also allowed three runs or more in eight of his past nine trips to the mound.
Spencer Arrighetti is tough to figure out, because he’s consistent in the number of innings he eats, but all over the map in how effective he is. When Houston sends him to the mound, the Astros know that they’ll get around six innings out of him. They might get an out or two more on a good day, an out or two less on a bad day, but six innings is usually the answer. And over his past eight starts, he’s been anywhere from shutting down the Orioles to giving up four runs and taking a loss against the White Sox.
