The Houston Astros (70-61 SU, 67-64 ATS) continue their series with the Philadelphia Phillies (77-54 SU, 66-65 ATS), who appear to be finding their way out of the storm. The Phillies’ post-All-Star slump meant their hold over baseball’s best record is long over, but they still have a reasonable shot at one of the two byes in the National League. Philadelphia still holds a six-game lead in the NL East and leads Milwaukee by 1.5 games, which means the Phils will be playing meaningful baseball the rest of the way.
Houston’s looking to find the wooden stake to lock away the AL West. The Astros now lead the Seattle Mariners by 3.5 games, thanks to the Mariners’ mid-August tailspin. However, Houston hasn’t shown the ability to beat quality teams, which could leave the Astros treading water if they can’t figure out that part of the equation.
