The Yankees failed to win either of their two series in August; incredibly, they were swept by the Marlins in Miami to kick off August, in an unusual first game that the Marlins won 13-12. Defensive errors, baserunning errors, a lackluster debut by their new acquisitions, and questionable managerial decisions have the Yankees in the eye of the storm, but after back-to-back losses to the Marlins and then the Rangers, they were at least able to win and salvage the final game of the series in Texas, winning 3-2 in the game in which their captain, Aaron Judge, returned to the lineup.

The Yankees begin a new series with a lot at stake against the Astros. New York still holds the last wild-card spot with just 1.5 games ahead of the Rangers and Guardians.

The Astros also went to Miami to play the Marlins, a series they won, but lost the final game; that was after being swept by the Red Sox in early August. The Astros will be playing nine straight road games until their series concludes on Sunday against the Yankees in the Bronx.

Hunter Brown, with a 2.47 ERA, will be opening the series in New York for the Astros; he pitched seven solid innings with just one ER in his last outing against the Red Sox.
