The Los Angeles Angels (24-38 SU, 36-26 ATS) look to regain the form they showed last month in Houston against the Astros (28-35 SU, 28-35 ATS) as the teams start a weekend series. Things have been rather bleak in Orange County this year, but the Angels are coming off a three-game sweep of San Diego.
Griffin Canning will certainly hope things have turned a corner for his team, as he looks to break his struggles at getting a win. Canning has been a bright spot for Los Angeles, as he hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in any of his past six starts. But only one of those resulted in a win, as he’s been the losing pitcher twice and posted three no-decisions because of a lack of offense.

The big key for Houston is whether Framber Valdez is back to form. If he is, the Astros’ attempt to climb back into the race in the AL West isn’t that farfetched. Only Seattle has managed to play even .500 baseball in the division, and the Astros sit just 7.5 games out of first despite their disastrous spring.
Valdez has looked better recently. His past five starts have mostly gone well, as he’s put three in the win column and held four of five opponents to three runs or less. But Valdez has really struggled against AL West opponents. Since he returned on April 28, Valdez is 3-0 against non-division foes and 1-3 against AL West teams. The one win was over Oakland, which plays more like a Double-A team. Against the Mariners and Angels, Valdez allowed 16 runs and the Astros got outscored 17-9. Because of Valdez’s struggles and Canning’s surge, there’s lots of value on the Angels. Our prediction for Houston vs. Los Angeles is for the Angels to win.
