Houston, who has batted .253 with 4.5 runs per game, lost to the Reds 5-3 on Tuesday despite starting ace pitcher Justin Verlander, who has compiled a 3-5 record with a 4.52 ERA in a season marred by multiple injuries. Tuesday’s series-opening victory over Houston gifted the Reds its first back-to-back win since they swept the St. Louis Cardinals in mid-August. At 66-73, Cincinnati still has a slim chance of clinching a wild-card playoff spot but they have to start racking up wins because there are only 20+ games left on their schedule.
