The Houston Astros (60-55 SU, 59-56 ATS) look to keep their momentum going as they face the Boston Red Sox (61-53 SU, 53-61 ATS). The Astros come in as winners of three straight and have tied Seattle for first place in the AL West. Houston appears to be feeling the pressure of its situation, as the Astros now know that winning the division is probably their only path to the playoffs.
The Red Sox have to clean up the defense if they’re going to have any chance at the postseason. Boston had been playing better with five wins in six games, but the old issues with run prevention have resurfaced yet again over the past few games. Against Kansas City, the Red Sox allowed 18 runs in three games, and they gave up another eight runs in the series opener with Houston.

Throwing a bullpen game is a risk for the Red Sox, but so much is going to depend on the defense anyway. Boston usually scores plenty of runs and gives up plenty of runs because it’s a good hitting team that cannot field well at all. Throwing several relievers at Houston could work out, although it’s more likely that if it does, it’ll end with the Red Sox scoring in double digits.
The Astros send Spencer Arrighetti, which carries its own set of risks. Arrighetti hasn’t been bad; it’s just seemed that the Astros don’t give him anywhere near the support that he needs. When he throws a gem like he did against Tampa Bay, the Astros provide him with no runs. When he has a bad day, such as against Oakland, the Astros still haven’t scored enough to bail him out. With the total being as high as it is and Arrighetti seemingly jinxed, our prediction for Houston vs. Boston is for the Red Sox to win.
