The Golden State Valkyries visit the Seattle Storm for a WNBA season opener game on Friday, May 8, at Climate Pledge Arena.
The two teams met once in the preseason, with the Valkyries taking a close 78-76 win over the Storm on April 25. The Valkyries made almost half of their three-point attempts (15-33 3PT), while holding the Storm to a measly 39% shooting from the field.
Veronica Burton and Miela Sowah led the Valkyries with 14 points apiece. Kaitlyn Chen was the other double-digit scorer with 11 markers off the bench. Flau'jae Johnson and Zia Cooke topscored for the Storm with 12 points each.
The Valkyries surprised a lot of people last season by entering the playoffs. They finished the regular season with a decent 23-21 record, considering that it was their first year in the WNBA. They eventually lost to the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx in the first round, but the Valkyries surely earned the attention of the league.
Golden State is currently ranked 9th in the WNBA's Power Rankings, citing the addition of Gabby Williams in free agency. Interestingly, Williams is a former Storm player.
Meanwhile, the Storm is ranked 11th, two spots below the Valkyries. They added two prized rookies in the draft, namely Awa Fam and Flau'jae Johnson.
