The United States faces a winless Germany in the fourth round of group play at the 2026 IIHF World Championship on Wednesday at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich, Switzerland.
Germany is without Leon Draisaitl at the tournament, and the team’s offense has been anemic so far. They have scored just twice in three games, leading to multi-goal losses in all three outings. In their last game against Switzerland, the Germans managed to generate just 17 shots on goal.
Team USA is also lacking star power and has been only slightly better than Germany. Don Granato’s side beat a weak Great Britain 5-1 but hasn’t been a match for Switzerland and Finland. After allowing five goals in 22 minutes during Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the Finns, the U.S. must focus on improving its defense.
If the Americans don’t come out all guns blazing, which appears likely, this contest could end up mirroring all three previous Germany games. Other than an awful second period against Switzerland on Monday, when the team allowed five goals, Germany has been strong at the back.
Harold Kreis’ team will have the best chance of winning when it can slow the pace of the game and doesn’t give up many scoring chances.
