This final day of the Europa League group stage is a big one for Belgian club Genk, currently in 10th place, who have the chance to finish in the top eight and qualify directly for the round of 16 of this year's competition. As for Malmo, their fate is already sealed, with the Swedish club already eliminated from all European competitions.
Belgian club Genk, which is only three points behind Midtjylland in fourth place and one point behind Betis Sevilla in eighth place, should logically move into the top eight if it wins against the Swedish team, which has had nothing to play for for a long time. Genk is coming off a fine victory in the Netherlands against Utrecht (0-2) last week thanks to goals from El Ouahdi and Heymans on a penalty kick. This is the fourth European victory in seven games for the current 11th-placed team (out of 16) in the Jupiler Pro League, which drew 1-1 at home against Cercle Brugge this weekend. After drawing with Betis (0-0) and beating Basel (2-1) in their last two European home games, Genk needs three points against second-to-last Malmo FF.
Malmo's performance throughout its European campaign has been lackluster, with six defeats in seven games. In search of its first European victory, Malmo, which finished its season in sixth place (out of 16) in early November, has suffered four consecutive defeats on the European stage against Panathinaikos (0-1), Nottingham (3-0), Porto (2-1), and Red Star Belgrade (0-1) on January 22. The victory over Sparta Prague (1-0) in a friendly on January 16 was not confirmed a few days later. The only point earned in this Europa League was against Dinamo Zagreb (1-1) on October 23.
