SC Braga, a team that ranks among the top 10 clubs with the most Europa League appearances, has never won this competition. However, after defeating German side Freiburg 2-1 in the first leg of their semifinal in Portugal, they have a historic opportunity to reach the final in Istanbul.
In the Portuguese league, SC Braga will not climb higher than their current fourth-place position. However, that position only grants them a spot in the next Conference League. Therefore, their entire focus is on winning this Europa League. The same is true for Freiburg: the "Black Forest eleven" is currently seventh in the Bundesliga after drawing their previous match against Wolfsburg, and their only path to the next Champions League is to win this Europa League.
German teams have been enjoying recent success in the competition; a Bundesliga team has been in three of the last five finals.
