Two teams that were considered dark horses from the start to win this Europa League have already advanced to the quarterfinals and will face each other first at the Europa-Park Stadion for the first leg of their quarterfinal tie.

In the league phase, Freiburg secured a top-eight finish, ending seventh with 17 points, four more than their opponents on Thursday. Freiburg has been particularly strong at home in Europa League matches, winning their last nine, including a fantastic 5-1 thrashing of Belgian side Genk in the round of 16, where Suzuki, Grifo, Matanovic, Ginter, and Eggestein all scored.

Meanwhile, Celta Vigo is on the verge of reaching another European semifinal, their first since 2017. Since the beginning of February, the Galician side has only lost three matches in regulation time, one of them against Real Madrid, and in all those defeats, they were never beaten by more than a single goal. Celta Vigo are coming off two valiant victories in the playoffs; they beat PAOK both in Greece and in Spain, and pulled off a major upset at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais by eliminating Lyon, who had enjoyed a near-perfect league campaign, with Rueda and Jutgla scoring the goals.

Last weekend, Freiburg played an epic match that ended in frustration. They were leading 2-0 against the dominant force in German football, Bayern Munich, before the Bavarians scored three goals in the final 10 minutes. Italian striker Grifo didn't play in that match, but given his influence in European competitions, he's almost certain to start against Celta.
