Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina has a breakthrough semifinal in his sight on Thursday, as he faces the up-and-coming Jakub Mensik of Czech Republic in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open.
Cerundolo gets a golden opportunity to advance into the semifinal round of an ATP-1000 level tournament following another upset win over Alexander Zverev of Germany 7-5 6-3 in the fourth round. The result gave Cerundolo his third career win over the world’s No.3, and more importantly, a better shot at a clay-court semifinal stint in Madrid after coming up short in Monte Carlo and Munich.
Mensik breezed through to the quarterfinal round with an emphatic 6-3 6-2 win over Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan. Two days after destroying Ben Shelton also in straight sets, Mensik looked dominant again against Bublik, scoring 10 aces and holding 100 percent of his serves. He also bagged three breakpoint conversions that allowed him to ice the match.
