We’ve reached the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup, the first of which takes place on Tuesday, when France and Spain will battle it out for a place in what is generally considered to be the biggest game in soccer.
For much of the tournament, the French have brushed opponents aside with ease, coming out on top without hitting top gear, thanks to the incredibly high level of offensive quality in their squad. Now, for the first time at this tournament, they’ll be up against a team that can dominate possession better than they can, a team that can make life very difficult, even for the best. At the same time, the Spanish will finally be facing a team that packs a serious counter-offensive punch, a team that can turn defense into offense in the blink of an eye.
This is a match between teams deploying contrasting styles, but both can be hugely effective in the final third, and given that neither team has had to do much defending at this World Cup, they could both struggle to contain, leaving us to conclude that this will be anything but a game devoid of scoring chances. ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ appeals most.

France - Spain: Form Analysis
Have Didier Deschamps' men been the best at the tournament so far? Well, given that they’ve created high-quality chances and scored goals with regularity, whilst dominating games and giving very little away, there’s certainly a case to be made.
Les Bleus have been far too good for each of their opponents at this World Cup, winning six out of five in regulation time, scoring 16 goals, conceding only two in the process. They’ve not conceded a knockout goal yet and have essentially cruised into the semi-finals without even coming close to fully extending themselves.
It is true that Deschamps’ men remain untested at the back. Even in the knockout stages, their opponents have struggled to get serious in the final third, so it will be very interesting to see how they cope with facing a team that certainly packs an offensive punch.

You could also argue that the Spaniards have impressed more than anyone else at this tournament. After all, they’ve reached the semi-finals having conceded just a single goal, keeping a very impressive five clean sheets in six games. They too have made the semi-final without needing to enter extra time.
We always knew what to expect from Luis de la Fuente’s men, and they’ve met those expectations, starving teams of possession by dictating each and every game with their easy-on-the-eye passing style. Opponents have really struggled to hurt the Spanish because they’ve simply not had enough of the ball, enduring long spells chasing shadows, while it must be said that one of Spain’s greatest strengths is the ability to rapidly regain the ball when possession does turn over, and this really does make it hard for teams to build up a head of steam.
Like the French, though, the Spanish will now be tested without the ball, so it will also be very interesting to see how they cope with the challenge of facing some of the best forwards in the competition.

France & Spain Squad Analysis
Much of Didier Deschamps’ team will remain the same for this game. We know that the likes of Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele, who’ve scored and assisted 13 goals between them at this tournament, will continue in the forward line, as well as Kylian Mbappe, who has so far netted seven goals at this World Cup.
There is some debate over who will fill the fourth spot in the French offense. Bradley Barcola was dropped for Desire Doue ahead of the quarter final, but the pair have switched quite regularly, so we cannot be sure which one of those two players will start this game.
Spain boss Luis de la Fuente probably won’t be looking to change too much either. Rodri will continue to run the show in midfield, but it will be interesting to see who starts alongside the midfield conductor, with Fabian Ruiz coming in for Pedri last time out.

The front four for La Roja, containing Alex Baena, Dani Olmo, Mikel Oyarzabal and wonderkid Lamine Yamal, is not expected to change. Mikel Merino, who has come off the bench to score the winner in each of the last two rounds, is expected to once again be used as an impact substitute.

Our France vs Spain Prediction
This is absolutely a clash between the two best offensive teams in the tournament. Both teams have so much creative ability, even if they take contrasting approaches. The Spanish have the ability to work the ball smartly in tight spaces, before picking the lock and creating chances that way, while the French are simply outstanding at exploding into life, especially on the break.
We also must not neglect the fact that this could be a bit of a shock for both teams defensively, and given that neither side has had to do much defending at the tournament so far, it probably won't be that hard for both to create chances and score goals. Moreover, the recent history between these two teams tells us to expect goals.
Our France vs Spain Pick: Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score.
France vs Spain - Other Interesting Picks
Tie
If you’re looking to bet on the result of this match, then consider betting on the tie at odds of +230. The French are deserving favorites, but should they be as short as +125? The gap between the pair is less than the early odds suggest, so the answer is no, leaving the tie to look a little generously priced. Each of the three meetings between the pair since 2021 has been tight, with neither winning by more than just a single goal, so do not be surprised if there’s nothing between the pair at the end of regulation time.
Ousmane Dembele to Assist
Ousmane Dembele is more known for his ability to score goals rather than create them, but in this French team, with Mbappe often shouldering much of the scoring responsibility, Dembele often acts as a provider, registering two assists at the tournament already, doing so as recently as the quarter-finals.
Considering that Dembele also ranks as one of the best players at this World Cup for key passes (= passes leading directly to a shot), averaging 2.92 per 90 minutes, odds of +390 for him to register an assist in this game look a little too large to ignore.
